Videolog: 24 Hours of Clean Water

October 15, 2010

(Yes, it’s Blog Action Day, but we’ve been collecting funds for clean water since September.)

This little video project is a mashup of two inspirations:

  1. My Day, Yesterday is a group on Flickr that makes cool, 90-second videos of one day. Two-to-three-second video clips, raw audio. It’s fun. I’ve made a few. You can watch them on Vimeo.
  2. MyCharity:Water. Our campaign is still going, although donations dropped off after my actual birthday. We have about another month, and we’re nearly half-way to our goal to pay for half a well in the Central African Republic.

Since I started the MyCharity:Water campaign, I’ve been noticing the water I use. The clean, drinkable (even if I’m not drinking it) water. And I started to wonder, “How often do I use clean, drinkable water every day and not even notice?”

So this is a Special Edition of My Day, Yesterday. It’s the Clean Water Edition.

How much clean water do you flush your toilet with every day? Not that you should feel guilty about it. It’s not your fault you were born here.

“For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required …” (Luke 12:48)

What if you donated $1 for every flush this week? What if you drank only water for a week, and donated the money you saved to help us build a well in Africa? (You’d probably appreciate that water more, just by virtue of being more aware of it.)

I know it’s hard. Money is tight for all of us right now. But none of us are contracting dysentery from our water. None of us are burying our children due to lack of sanitation. You can tell your friends how poor you are, but you probably couldn’t look a Bayaka man in the eye and tell him how poor you are.

Will you help? It doesn’t have to be $100, but maybe you can give $10. If we all gave just $10, people in the C.A.R. could be free from plague and sickness. Not everyone will, of course, you’re right … but will you?

you really go to the bathroom a lot. Also, I bet you have some of the whitest teeth and the cleanest hands on the planet. :-)

** all joking asside, good video Lex. Thanks for posting it for us and for being active in the effort to bring clean water to people who don’t have it. Did you hit your goal with the charity: water birthday effort?

I was at Panera for two hours drinking coffee! ;)

Thanks. The campaign isn’t quite at it’s goal yet, but I tend to set lofty goals. Anything we can put together for Charity:Water is awesome.
