One 12-year-old’s journey for LIFE

February 13, 2009

This is Lia. Lia is a 12-year-old who decided to use her persuasive speech assignment to tell her peers the truth about abortion.

The class winners would give their speeches for the entire school, and the winner there would go on to compete nationally. Her teachers tried to convince her to choose an easier, less controversial topic but she refused – even when they told her she would be immediately disqualified from advancing in the competition.

Bound4Life has been following her story on their blog. You can read some of the details here. Over the past couple days, Bound4Life has been Twittering about updates to the story. I finally got over there to see what’s going on and it’s amazing what God is doing with Lia.

From their blog:

UPDATE 2/10/09: Lia’s teacher was so moved by her handing of the content that she decided to allow her to participate in the competition after all. THEN LIA WON for her class. Today Lia is giving her speech to her entire school. Please pray for her.

UPDATE 2/11/09 11:07 AM EST: I just received word from Lia’s father that the school principal and teachers all agreed that Lia’s speech before the entire school was the OBVIOUS WINNER. But the judges overall decided to disqualify her because of the topic and her position on abortion. Frankly, this is wrong wrong wrong.

UPDATE 2/11/09 4:31 PM EST: This was an eventful day for Lia’s family as they pondered how to proceed with how the school chose to handle Lia’s situation. I’ve just received word from Lia’s father that the whole thing led to a big disagreement with the judges and one offended judge chose to step down. The other judges reversed their earlier decision, and Lia has been declared the WINNER. Lia will now advance to compete regionally and represent her school with this amazing message of LIFE.

Who can be against this girl?!

Will you pray for her?  She needs all the help she can get to maintain that boldness. I can’t tell you how many times a student (older than her) has given me one excuse or another for biting his/her tongue in class when presented with an opportunity to speak truth. Lia is tough.

Psalm 8:2//Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infantsYou have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
